Plenary Indulgence at
Miraculous Medal Shrine
During Year of Faith

God forgives our sins, but we must still do something to get rid of the distance between us and God that the sin has created.  The Sacrament of Confession forgives our sin and gives us a penance to do to say we are sorry for sinning.  However, the sinning has also caused a distance between us and God.  Now we must make up for the hurt, the distance that the sin has caused.  To get rid of the distance is called atonement.  We say prayers or do acts of penance to atone for our sins (lessen the distance or hurt caused by sin) so that we may be “at-one” with God.

Atonement can be done in many ways, for example through good acts to neighbors or by saying prayers to bring us closer to God.  This last method of atonement, to bring us closer to God through prayer is called a prayer indulgence.  There are two kinds of prayer indulgences – a partial indulgence which lessens the distance, or a plenary indulgence that completely removes the distance between us.

During the Year of Faith, you can obtain a plenary indulgence at the Miraculous Medal Shrine every time you take part in some function or service OR pause in silent prayer AND Recite the Our Father, the Apostles Creed (any profession of faith) and pray “O Mary Conceived Without Sin, Pray for Us who Have Recourse To Thee”.

Finally, if you are unable to visit the Miraculous Medal Shrine, especially if you are sick or physically unable, you may still gain the plenary indulgence if you wish or intend to be with us at the Shrine by participating in services or by praying the Novena through the internet and reciting the prayers above.  For more information, go to http://archphila.org/yearoffaith
